At the 67th Emmy Awards, Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson became the first two Black actresses to be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Taking home the win for her role in How to Get Away with Murder, Viola Davis passionately advocated for more representation in her speech: "The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity."

The nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series are Sharon Horgan, Melanie Lynskey, Elisabeth Moss, Bella Ramsey, Keri Russell, and Sarah Snook.
