Richard Davalos was an actor best known for his role in the 1955 Elia Kazan film East of Eden. Set during and around World War I, the film, adapted from the novel by John Steinbeck, told the story of two brothers vying for their father’s love, Davalos played the younger brother, Aron, opposite James Dean as his older brother, Cal.

Davalos also appeared in the classic Paul Newman-starring film Cool Hand Luke, as Blind Dick, a convict in the chain gang. Additionally, he had roles in the films The Sea Chase, with John Wayne and Lana Turner; All the Young Men, with Alan Ladd and Sidney Poitier; Kelly’s Heroes, starring Clint Eastwood; and Death Hunt, with Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin.

He appeared most frequently on television, including roles on Bonanza, Laramie, Perry Mason, Rawhide, Mannix, The Rockford Files, Hawaii Five-O, The Jeffersons, Hart to Hart and Murder, She Wrote.

The actor was discovered by Kazan himself, and was cast in Eden, his first film role, after only two television appearances — on Goodyear Playhouse and Ponds Theater. During the filming of Eden, he and Dean shared an apartment in Burbank.

Davalos was also featured on the cover art of Strangeways, Here We Come, the 1987 album by the British band the Smiths, as well as the cover art of the U.S. album releases of Best... I and ...Best II.

He died March 8, 2016, in Burbank, California. He was 85.
