After emigrating to the United States at age 18, Zale graduated from Hofstra University and served in the U.S. Navy before beginning his acting career.

On the big screen, Zale appeared in Frances (1982) with Jessica Lange, Invasion U.S.A. (1985) starring Chuck Norris, Postcards From the Edge (1990), Showgirls (1995), and Wakefield (2016) with Bryan Cranston.
Zale died August 28, 2020, in Los Angeles, California. He was 89.
