Alan Howard was a British actor known for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He played a lengthy series of lead roles at the National Theatre and in the West End, with notable performances as Macbeth and King Lear. Howard joined the company in 1966 and was a company member for 17 years.

He was also known for voicing the sounds of the ring in The Lord of the Rings. In 1990 he played Michael, the “lover” in director Peter Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, starring Helen Mirren.

While his work in theater was extensive, he was also a regular performer on British television shows, some of which aired in the U.S. He played Mr. Spenlow in the television movie David Copperfield, and he also appeared as Tietjens Senior in three episodes of the HBO miniseries Parade’s End, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall.
