Bob Pohle, Longtime NBC Camera Operator and Lighting Director

Pohle spent 35 years at NBC, where he had a lengthy tenure with The Tonight Show.

Bob Pohle, a Primetime Emmy-winning camera operator and lighting director whose many credits included The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, died of natural causes on July 13, 2011, in Rancho Mirage, California. He was 86.

A native of Los Angeles, Pohle attended Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra, where he developed a passion for tennis. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and served as a radioman in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

After the war, Pohle pursued a career in television and achieved success as a cameraman and lighting director and worked at NBC for over 35 years. In addition to The Tonight Show, his credits included Colgate Comedy Hour, This Is Your Life and Days of Our Lives.

In 1983, he received a primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lighting Direction for Sheena Easton... Act One.

In retirement, he divided his time between Palm Desert and La Jolla, where he played golf and tennis regularly and pursuded real-estate investing.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, a son, a daughter and three grandchildren.
