Antonia Rey

Antonia Rey was a Cuban-born American actress.

In her native Cuba in the 1950s, Rey was a leading lady of the stage, playing Madge in William Inge's Picnic, the title character in George Bernard Shaw's Candida and Elizabeth Proctor in Arthur Miller's The Crucible.

When Fidel Castro came to power in 1959 and established a Communist dictatorship, Rey and her husband, Andres Castro (no relation), a prominent theater director, came to the United States in 1961, settling in New York.

Her Broadway debut came in 1964, when she landed a role in the chorus in Bajour, starring Chita Rivera. She appeared in A Streetcar Named Desire and had small roles in two other productions of Tennessee Williams plays, The Rose Tattoo and Camino Real.

Rey appeared in 30 films, including Coogan's Bluff (with Clint Eastwood), Klute (with Jane Fonda), The Lords of Flatbush (with Sylvester Stallone and Henry Winkler), Moscow on the Hudson (with Robin Williams), and Jacob's Ladder (with Tim Robbins).

Her television work includes appearances on episodes of Ryan’s Hope, As the World Turns, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Third Watch, Dora the Explorer, and Madam Secretary.

Rey died February 21, 2019, in New York City, New York. She was 92.
