Martha Lavey was a former performer and artistic director of the Steppenwolf Theatre.
Before her work as an administrator with the theater, Lavey worked as an actress, and made her first appearance with the company in John Malkovich’s 1981 production of Savages. She later appeared in Aunt Dan and Lemon and Love Letters, before joining the ensemble cast in 1993.
From 1995 to 2015 she served as the theater’s artistic director. She was the first woman to hold the position. During her tenure she oversaw the production of hundreds of plays, including August: Osage County and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
As a performer, Lavey appeared in the series Missing Persons and the 1989 film Cold Justice. She also appeared in the 2015 documentary series Working in the Theatre.
Lavey died April 25, 2017, in Chicago, Illinois. She was 60.
