Doris Kanter was a writer and artist who often worked with her late husband, acclaimed comedy writer Hal Kanter, who died in 2011.

Kanter, who was born in New York City, was a talented singer who declined an opera scholarship to Juilliard and instead took night classes at Hunter College while working during the day to help support her family. She eventually found work in the fashion department at Parents magazine, where she oversaw fashion shows at New York hotels and discovered a love for writing when she penned a monthly feature about children's fashion.

After marrying Hal Kanter and moving to Los Angeles she wrote for such programs as Chico and the Man, Night Court, You Can't Take It with You and United States, the latter of which she co-wrote with renowned writer with Larry Gelbart.

Also a gifted visual artist, she designed the opening title sequence for her husband's series Julia, starring Diahann Carroll.

Kanter died March 18, 2014, in Encino, California. She was 95.
