Peter Hammond, British Actor Turned Prolific TV Director

Hammond's credits included several memorable U.K. series, including The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Morse.

Peter Hammond, an Engllishman who began his career as an actor, and went on to become a prolific television director, died October 12, 2011, in London. He was 87.

Hammond broke into British cinema as an actor in the early 1940s, and remained a performer into the mid-1960s.

By that time he was also directing, which he devoted himself to full time from the late ’60s.

He directed mainly for television, including such U.S. series as The Avengers, the Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett, Inspector Morse and dozens of others.
