Heart Problems Claim Beloved Actress Connie Hines

Best known for playing Alan Young’s wife on the 1960s comedy series Mr. Ed.

Actress Connie Hines, best known for her role on the 1960s television comedy Mr. Ed, died December 18, 2009, at her Beverly Hills home. She was 78.

According to news reports, the cause of death was complications related to heart problems.

Mr. Ed, which aired on CBS from 1961 to 1966, starred Alan Young as Wilbur Post, the only person able to communicate with the title character, a talking horse. Hines played Wilbur’s oblivious wife, Carol.

Hines also appeared in episodes of many other television shows, including Bonanza, Perry Mason, The Millionaire and The Mod Squad.

She was born March 24, 1931, in Dedham, Massachusetts. Her father was a teacher and acting coach, and her mother was an actress. She was reportedly popular in high school; improbably, given her future success, when she auditioned for the senior class play, she did not win the role.

When her father passed away, she married and moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where she began modeling and acting.

When the marriage ended in divorce, she studied acting in New York, and later relocated to Los Angeles to pursue her career there.

In 1970, she married Lee Savin, an entertainment lawyer and producer. They retired in the late 1980s; Savin died in 1989.
