Governor's Ball Preview at the Academy

Today, visitors to the conference center at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences were magically transported back in time to the 1940s. The occasion? A sneak preview of the Governor's Ball, which remade the center into a vision of classic Hollywood, complete with vintage décor, design and food.

The theme of this year's ball is "Club 55 at Cocoanut Grove," and is inspired by the famed Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

"The world famous Cocoanut Grove restaurant is widely known to have been a Mecca for the stars of the forties and fifties, said Dwight Jackson, chairman of the Governor's Ball event committee. "With the 55th anniversary of the Primetime Emmy Awards, we thought it fitting to go back 55 years and celebrate by recreating this magical place."

Here's a look at the highlights of Club 55:

Guests will be treated to the music of the seventeen-piece Glenn Miller Orchestra, as swing dancers and cigarette girls mingle throughout the room.

The menu, prepared by world-renowned Patina chef Joachim Splichal, is recreated in part from such fabled Hollywood menus as Cyrano's and the Cocoanut Grove, features such legendary dishes as the Brown Derby Grapefruit Cake and other items inspired by the chefs of the period.

Glowing Art Deco structures will cover columns throughout the room with stylish '40s sconces. The main mahogany bar will feature a rear lit, tropical foliage pattern taken from the original doors at the Grove. And the ceiling will showcase a night sky framed by Art Deco moldings, varying from dusk to late evening with moving cloud formations.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences event committee responsible for the Governors Ball is chaired by Dwight Jackson and vice-chaired by Jeannie Gunn, with James Anderson, Donna Kanter and Geriann McIntosh serving as committee members. Sequoia Productions serves as the event's official producer, with Cheryl Cecchetto and Dennis Lumpkin responsible for all aspects of the Governors Ball.
