Bill Hargate, Murphy Brown's Costume Designer

Emmy winner Bill Hargate, a Hollywood costume designer who won four statuettes for his work in television, has died at age 68.

Hargate is best known for creating the look of Murphy Brown, a news anchorwoman played by Candice Bergen in the eponymously named show. Brown's outfits consisted of designer business outfits which sparked fashion trends among working women.

Hargate studied costume and set design at the Goodman School of Theater in Chicago and began his career with the St. Louis Municipal Opera. He went on to design costumes for the Broadway revivals of Peter Pan and Oklahoma!He began his career in television at NBC's Burbank studios in the 1970's, assisting the wardrobe department in costuming hundreds of actors a week.
