Steve Jordan and David Paich are rocking the Emmys this year. Literally.

Esteemed music director-composer-producer Jordan — known to many fans as a member of the John Mayer Trio and original David Letterman Show drummer — brought fellow music director-composer Paich of Grammy-winning band Toto aboard to work through all the music aspects of this year's Primetime Emmy Awards live telecast.

"In previous years up to this telecast, it's always been big orchestras and that kind of thing, so (Don Mischer, 2009 Emmy show executive producer) wanted to do something different," Jordan said.

The band will be on stage this year, for one thing, and though Jordan says they are "going to have a smaller group," the talent in that ensemble could not be bigger.

Jordan will play drums. Paich is joined by Michael Jackson's last music director Michael Bearden joins Paich on keys. Dean Parks and Ray Parker Jr. are on guitar. Lenny Castro plays percussion and Darryl Jones &mdash longtime bass guitar player with the Rolling Stones since Bill Wyman retired — will play bass on Emmy night.

Sax legend Tom Scott, Dancing with the Stars trumpet lead Rick Baptist, star string players Gayle Levant, Cecilia Tsan, Alyssa Park, Endre Granat, Karen Elaine and more powerhouse instrumentalists round out the woodwinds, brass and string sections.

Emmys.com's Juliana J. Bolden visited this stellar line-up on a rehearsal day at legendary Capitol Records Studios in Hollywood with Flip cam in hand, and brought back loads of smiles, laughter and excitement for the 2009 show. Watch:
