Gregory Walcott was an actor best known for his roles in the films Mister Roberts, The Eiger Sanction and Norma Rae, in which he played the police chief who hauled away Sally Field’s character during the film’s famous protest scene. He also appeared in the film Plan 9 from Outer Space, directed by Edward Wood. It is widely regarded to be one of the worst films ever made, but now considered a cult classic.

Walcott worked on several projects with Clint Eastwood, including Joe Kidd, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Eiger Sanction and Every Which Way but Loose. He also worked with Eastwood on the classic television series Rawhide, playing different characters over several years.

Walcott’s other television work included parts on the series Perry Mason, Maverick, The Rifleman, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, Wagon Train, Tales of Wells Fargo, Laramie, Mod Squad, Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, Kojak, The Six Million Dollar Man, CHiPs, Dynasty, Dallas and Murder, She Wrote. Many of the shows he worked on were western themed, playing to his burly six-foot-four-inch frame.

He also starred as Det. Roger Havilland on the NBC series 87th Precinct, which lasted for 30 episodes over one season. The police drama, set in Manhattan and following the lives of the officers of the 87th, was based on the popular series of novels by Ed McBain.

In 2003 he published his memoir, Hollywood Adventures: The Gregory Walcott Story.

Walcott died March 20, 2015, in Los Angeles. He was 87.
