Mad Men, Extras Top Globes for TV

Strike knocks all the dazzle off this year's beleaguered Golden Globes

Beverly Hills, CA – The ten-week old Writer's Guild of America strike dulled the glow of Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards, with its last-resort, barebones press conference replacing what is traditionally one of Hollywood's most glamour-filled evenings of the year.

Some nominees had trouble just trying to find a television channel airing the event, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Though CNN and E!, among others, opted to air the 40-minute winners announcements live from the uncharacteristically empty Beverly Hilton Hotel, original Golden Globes net NBC instead aired an alternate special featuring Access Hollywood's Nancy O'Dell and Billy Bush.

NBC's eleventh-hour programming switch—prompted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's decision to open the conference to all media—left some viewers scrambling to find Globes conference coverage.

Ratatouille director and Globe winner Brad Bird told the Times that while he watched the announcements on the TV Guide Network, he received a call from the film's producer who could not find a channel carrying the Globes event. "I go, 'We won' and he never did find the channel," Bird told the Times.

David Duchovny of Showtime's Californication, who won the Globe for best actor in a television comedy or musical series, echoed the sentiments of many when he said: "Everyone's a loser right now."

"The Golden Globes is a fun night," Duchovny explained,"It's more fun than the other awards shows—and it's too bad we didn't get to have fun." Much more than the Globes not being televised, Duchovny believes everyone's focus is on the cumulative toll of the AMPTP-WGA conflict: "I think there are a lot of tears over people losing money and losing jobs."
