International Emmys: Special Awards Include MTV International

MTV International, cited for its work against AIDS and HIV while sparking an international music revolution, has been named 2004 winner of the International Emmy Founders Award, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced.

Two individuals, Herbert Kloiber, managing director of Germany's Tele-München Group, and Len Mauger, veteran Australian Channel Nine broadcaster, were also singled out for special honors at the 32nd International Emmy Awards, scheduled Nov. 22 in New York.

Viacom, MTV's parent company, was recognized last month by TV Cares, the HIV/AIDS fundraising and awareness arm of the Television Academy, for its "Know HIV/AIDS" initiative, the first global cross-platform campaign on the topic.

Last year, MTV International's Staying Alive campaign reached 938 million households, or 74 percent of all TV households worldwide, the International Academy said. A comprehensive website, www.staying-alive.org, is available in five languages and includes a database of links to local resources.

Kloiber is winner of The International Emmy Directorate Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the arts and sciences of television over a period of time. Previous winners include Greg Dkye, Akio Morita, Gustavo Cisneros, Silvio Berlusconi, Dr. Frank Stanton and Ted Turner.

Like Kloiber, Mauger has had a long and distinguished broadcasting career and is currently associated with Nine Network Australia. He is winner of the Ted Cott Award, named after one of the founders of the International Academy and given to board members who have contributed significantly to the organization.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which recently became a part of the Television Academy, is the largest organization of global broadcasters, with members from 61 countries and over 250 companies. For more information, visit www.iemmys.tv.
