Information About the September 13 Creative Arts Awards

Over the past few months the Board of Governors of the Academy has struggled with the problem of the ever-escalating length of the Creative Arts Awards evening. With this year’s addition of several new awards, the length of the event was threatening to exceed four hours.

At the Board of Governors meeting on July 16, 2003, a proposal was extensively discussed, debated and approved by a majority vote. The board agreed, on a one-year test basis, to shorten the show by more than an hour by transferring fifteen awards to a separate same-day event to be held during a pre-show at the Shrine Auditorium. This is similar to the procedure used at the Grammy and Tony Awards. An independently supervised lottery was held to select the categories. (One individual achievement award from each of the multiple award categories, (Animation, Picture Editing, Music, etc.) and two awards from the Non-Fiction individual achievement awards selected on a rotating basis.)

This event will take place between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 13th and the doors will open at 2:30 pm. There will be a small reception with food and beverages served at that time. The remaining awards will be given out at 5:00 pm.

All nominees being honored on September 13 are invited to attend both the 3:00 pm and the 5:00 pm event, walk the red carpet, go through the press line, and enjoy the Governors Ball.

Please note that if you do not attend the 3:00 pm program, a pre-edited clip package will be shown at the 5:00 pm event that will feature all of the nominees as well as Emmy recipients and will be included in the televised version of the Creative Arts Awards on E! Entertainment (telecast time and date still to be determined) in exactly the same format as all of the other awards.

Concerning tickets:

  • Each nominee is offered a complimentary ticket for the 5:00 PM program/Governors Ball and another 5:00 PM program/Governors Ball for a guest.
  • Additional tickets for the 5:00 PM program/Governors Ball may be purchased ($500).
  • People attending the 3:00 PM program will be asked to show their 5:00 PM auditorium ticket at the door, but the 3:00 PM program will be open seating in the front of the orchestra.
  • If a nominee wishes to bring a guest to the 3:00 PM program, there is no charge for the guest (who will be admitted only in the company of the nominee.)
  • The house will be cleared at 4:00 PM and reseated at 5:00 PM. Only ticket holders will be admitted and, as per usual, they will sit in their assigned seats.
  • Only ticket holders will be admitted to the Governors Ball.
