Stephen Colbert and market-share winner The Colbert Report keeps fans buzzing online.

John Goodman visited Late Night with Seth Meyers, which beats its competitors in social engagement — thanks to its smaller yet more active fanbase.

Social Buzz: Who Keeps Fans Talking in Late Night?

This week's edition of Social Buzz asks: Which late-night talkers are fueling the most engagment with fans online?

Whether you’re an insomniac or not, late night talk shows tend to cause quite a bit conversation off screen — at work, with friends and especially on social.

If your feeds are anything like ours, chances are you’ve seen a post or two about Jimmy Kimmel’s latest edition of celebrity mean tweets or Jimmy Fallon’s #Hashtags. As a result, it seemed only fitting to dedicate this week’s Social Buzz to late night television.

We wanted to know exactly how these iconic stars and their engaging comedy antics fared on the most popular social networks. We asked:

  • Did Metallica’s reputation combined with their week-long residency on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson promote fan chatter?
  • Were fans excited about Seth Meyers’ latest interview with John Goodman and performance by Interpol?
  • Did talk about Jimmy Kimmel’s celebrity mean tweets and curse-offs translate to talk on social?
  • Was David Letterman’s casual conversation with Amy Sedaris about dying pets enough to get pet-lovers talking on social?
  • Are "Thank You Notes," "Pros and Cons" and Tonight "#Hashtags" enough to keep fans engaged with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon?
  • Stephen Colbert recently had a lovely chat with his old friend and arch nemesis Jon Stewart. Did this old “rivalry” get fans talking on Facebook and Twitter?

What we found may surprise you:

While The Colbert Report and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon hold larger market shares, the smaller, yet more engaged audience of Late Night with Seth Meyers propelled it to the top of our chart this week. (See above).

And, interestingly enough, even with a smaller total engagement per 1K fans/followers, the Late Show with David Letterman had the most Twitter engagement per 1K followers.
