Social Buzz: Top TV Shows - January 4 - 10, 2015

What's keeping you warm this winter?

For many Americans, this past week was chock full of freezing temperatures, snow… and more snow. But while many of you may be tempted to curse Old Man Winter, we must admit that cold weather just makes indulging our inner couch potato by watching the latest TV premieres that much more inviting — and these shows certainly did not disappoint us. We decided to put two newcomers and three favorites under the social spotlight: Galavant, Empire, Masterchef Junior, Switched at Birth, and Archer. With such a great beginning to the season, we wanted to know if fans were warming up to:

  • The hero and his quest to restore his “happily ever after” in the premiere of Galavant

  • The mini chefs cooking up a storm in the second season of Masterchef Junior
  • Bay and Daphne’s continued relationship drama on Switched at Birth

  • Sterling Archer’s newest adventures and shenanigans on the sixth season of Archer
  • The premiere of the brand new hip hop drama Empire and its interesting spin on the classical works of William Shakespeare

The Social Totals

When looking at the sheer number of social engagements on Facebook and Twitter, Empire clearly ruled over the other shows here with 57.0% of engagement market share.

Active Audiences

Winning the biggest chunk of total engagements doesn’t necessarily mean that the show’s audience was more talkative or expressive. But this week, we found that Empire conquered this metric as well, with the most engagements per 1K users on both social networks. The show achieved 1,119.7 engagements per 1K fans on Facebook, and defeated the competition on Twitter with 1,141.2 engagements per 1K followers.

Though these were the five premieres we chose to focus on this week, there were several others that deserve honorable mentions. These included well-known favorites Downton Abbey, American Idol, and Portlandia, which all achieved over 100 total social engagements per 1K users. Other mentions include Glee and Cougartown which both got over 70 total social engagements per 1K users.
