Dr. Joyce Brothers, Popular Psychologist with Decades of Television Appearances
Brothers went from a high-profile game show victory to a career spanning more than half a century as a television commentator and actress.
Joyce Brothers, a psychologist who became a prominent media figure, including appearances on dozens of television programs, died May 13, 2013, in Fort Lee, New Jersey. She was 85.
According to news reports the cause was respiratory following a lengthy illness.
Brothers earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Cornell University in 1947, and continued her education at Columbia University, where she earned a master's degree in 1950 and a doctorate in 1953.
She first garnered public recognition in 1955, when she won the TV game show The $64,000 Question, fueled by her remarkable knowledge of boxing. She began appearing regularly as a television commentator three years later. She also worked for years as a newspaper and magazine columnist.
Brothers's topics of expertise included relationships, marriage and sex.
Her numerous TV appearances included nearly 100 visits to Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show as well as roles on scripted series ranging from Happy Days to Entourage.
She also had roles in feature films, including The King of Comedy and Analyze This.
