René Auberjonois was an American actor.

Raised in New York, Paris and London, Auberjonois made his mark as a stage actor, eventually earning four Tony Award nominations, including one win for his work opposite Katharine Hepburn in 1969’s Coco, a musical based on the life of designer Coco Chanel.

Auberjonois’s first film credit came in 1970, when he played the role of Father John "Dago Red" Mulcahy in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H. He appeared in three other films directed by Altman: Brewster McCloud (1970), McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971), and Images (1972).

A prolific television actor, Auberjonois’s best-known TV roles were Clayton Runnymede Endicott III, chief of staff at the governor’s mansion on Benson; Odo, the shape-shifting Changeling and head of space-station security on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; and Paul Lewiston, senior partner in the law firm Crane, Poole and Schmidt on Boston Legal.

Most recently, Auberjonois recurred on several episodes of CBS’s political drama Madam Secretary.

Auberjonois died December 8, 2019, in Los Angeles, California. He was 79.
