Obituary

Marvin Kaplan was a character actor best known for his role as Henry the telephone repairman on the long-running CBS sitcom Alice. He also voiced the character Choo Choo in the Hanna-Barbera animated series Top Cat.

Kaplan notably made his onscreen debut in the 1949 comedy Adam’s Rib, in an uncredited role as a stenographer. Katherine Hepburn, who starred in the film with Spencer Tracy, discovered Kaplan while seeing him in a play by Molière.

Kaplan went on to appear in the films Angels in the Outfield, The Nutty Professor, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Freaky Friday, The Great Race and Wild at Heart.

He also had roles on the series McHale’s Navy, Gidget, My Three Sons, Petticoat Junction, Mod Squad, I Dream of Jeannie, Charlie’s Angels, CHiPs, MacGyver, Cagney & Lacey, My Two Dads, ER and Becker.
