Time to Shine

The first stop many Primetime Emmy presenters and winners make when they walk off stage is the Emmy® magazine backstage portrait studio. Celebrity photographer Charles Bush captured these moments for the 65th Primetime Emmys, in a elegant collaboration with renowned television set designer Darren Ransdell.

With statues firmly in hand, the Primetime Emmy winners step off the stage and into a happy haze.
There are hugs to share, calls to make, interviews to do and parties to catch. But first, a stop at the Emmy® magazine backstage portrait studio, where photographer Charles Bush captures the golden glow that radiates from that fateful phrase, “And the Emmy goes to...."
For the 65th Primetime Emmys, Bush collaborated with designer Darren Ransdell on the most elaborate set of his eight years as the magazine's exclusive backstage portrait photographer for the Primetime Emmy Awards. The designer explains the set concept this way:
“Working in a small space is always challenging. When working in a set that will hold one person, then minutes later must hold a team of twenty or thirty, the challenge multiplies as fast as those in the set," Randsdell explained.
This year, he added depth by staggering walls and using portions of a floor to show reflections — at once glamorous, flattering and layered.
“The pieces were also layered, mostly vintage pieces with a twist," he said. "Our blue Louis XV set- tee is something different and dimensional, as is the French cane sofa with pink Belgian velvet and wool bouclé. Also adding dimension was our silver-plated mirror with scroll design as well as a brass pedestal and brass Chiavari chair upholstered in Italian silk.
"We used a faux leopard rug, and — last, but not least — a silver-leaf scroll chair in gold thread upholstery — reminiscent of Jean Harlow, but brought to life by Ellen Burstyn."

Primetime Emmy® Award winners like Burstyn would likely have enjoyed a longer stay, but Bush’s backstage portraits are accomplished in only minutes. Then it’s on to those press interviews, parties — and a lifetime as an Emmy winner.
