Me and My Emmy: David Klotz

A childhood obsession with film sountracks has paid off for David Klotz.

Primetime Emmy Tally: Four

How He Got the Gold: Outstanding sound editing for Game of Thrones in 2012 and 2015, American Horror Story: Asylum in 2013 and Stranger Things in 2017.

Now for the Noms: Klotz has been nominated 12 times.

Ah-Ha Moment: "The first time I was nominated was probably the most meaningful. Even though my parents were pleased that I was working in music editing, I don't think they quite understood what I was doing for a living. But everyone understands what an Emmy is."

C'est Si Bon! "One year, a few of us found our way to a nightclub in Chinatown after the Governors Ball. A friend of mine was deejaying a French pop night. We were quite out of place in our tuxedos and gowns, but we danced to Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin until closing time.

The Creative Arts Emmys is a gathering of artists, musicians, tinkerers and sound nerds. Imagine those people dancing to French pop! That's unforgettable."

Four Scored: "A shelf in my office is perfectly suited for three statues. Now that number four has arrived, I'll have to rethink the arrangement. For now, the new Emmy is on top of my piano. I lined up all four on the piano, but my girlfriend made fun of me. She said I was showing off."

Pump It Up: "Growing up, I never knew that there was such a job as a music editor, but I recognized how music could add weight to a narrative. Some of my favorite examples were the way 'And Then He Kissed Me' by The Crystals was used in Goodfellas or the way 'L'Enfant' by Vangelis was cut into The Year of Living Dangerously.

Scenes like those ignited my childhood obsession with film soundtracks. When I cut something together and instantly see that it enhances the power of the story, that's the best part of my job."
