Mark Cowen, Acclaimed Documentary Producer and Director

Cowen helped to shape behind-the-scenes marketing video content, including electronic press kits and “making of” documentaries.

Mark Cowen, a prolific producer and director known for numerous acclaimed documentary productions, died September 12, 2012, in Virginia. He was 50.

According to news reports, the cause was complications from a debilitating illness.

A native of San Marino, California, Cowen began his entertainment industry career at ZM Productions, where he helped to pioneer the creation of behind-the-scenes marketing materials such as electronic press kits for feature films.

He later worked extensively in the nonfiction genre, and produced and directed the Primetime Emmy-nominated documentary We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company, a companion to the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

His other notable credits included the IMAX film Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D and, most recently, America’s Greatest Feud: Hatfields and McCoys, a companion documentary to the History miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, which is nominated for 16 Emmys this year.
