Tuning In for the "Talk"
How TV is Approaching Love, Sex, and Pregnancy and How American Young People are Responding
As young adult viewers become more valuable to programmers and brands, the stories that reach and engage these viewers – particularly around matters of sex, pregnancy, and contraception – also take on increased significance. What do these young viewers take away from portrayals of sex, birth control, power dynamics and personal choice as portrayed by the characters and series they relate to?
Now more than ever, media matters: TV shows and their creators have helped drive historic declines in teen and unplanned pregnancy over the past 20 years. But progress is not victory. The panel will explore how TV writers and producers approach sex, love, relationships, and contraception, and how young adults engage with (or avoid) those conversations. It will also address how you can tackle these issues in your shows in meaningful ways that support the stories you want to tell. When young people have the knowledge and power to decide if, when, and under what circumstances to get pregnant everybody wins.
