Jim Byrne was a former director of marketing for CBS. He served the company for 19 years, during which he worked closely with Walter Cronkite, the renowned anchor of the CBS Evening News. He also served as the director of information at CBS News and as the director of communications for the United States Football League.

In 1959, Byrne graduated from Syracuse's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and served in the armed forces. In the 1970s, he served as the U.S. assistant postmaster general and later as a senior vice president at the advertising agency N.W. Ayer.

He also wrote several books, including The $1 League: The Rise and Fall of the USFL, about his experience with the short-lived football league. He also penned a book about his collaboration with Cronkite during the network’s coverage of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.
