Georgia Engel was an American actress.

Engel studied theater in Hawaii, earning her theater degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Engel began her career as a replacement player near the end of the original Broadway run of Hello, Dolly!

After being seen in John Guare’s play, The House of Blue Leaves, in Los Angeles by Mary Tyler Moore and her husband, producer Grant Tinker, Engel was cast as Georgette Franklin, girlfriend and eventually wife of TV newsman Ted Baxter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The role earned her back to back Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Continuing Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1976 and 1977.

Engel co-starred with Betty White on CBS’s The Betty White Show (1977-78). Engel also guested on such shows as The Love Boat, Mork & Mindy and Fantasy Island.

She was a series regular on two single-season sitcoms on ABC: Goodtime Girls in 1980, and the 1983-84 sitcom Jennifer Slept Here. Engel recurred as Shirley Burleigh on Coach from 1991-97.

She joined CBS’s Everybody Loves Raymond in 2003 and would receive three consecutive Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for playing the mother-in-law of Robert Barone (Brad Garrett).

Engel continued to work in TV, recurring as Mamie in 20 episodes of Hot in Cleveland (pairing her with Betty White once again), and her final credit was a 2018 appearance in Netflix’s One Day at a Time.

Engel died April 12, 2019, in Princeton, New Jersey. She was 70.
