Dan Haggerty

Dan Haggerty was an actor best known for portraying Grizzly Adams in the telefilms Once Upon a Starry Night and The Capture of Grizzly Adams and the feature films The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams and Legend of the Wild. He also starred as the outdoorsman in the 1970s NBC television series The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, an adaptation of the film.

Haggerty’s famous character was based on a real-life trapper who lived in California in the 1880s. In the series of films and shows, James Capen “Grizzly” Adams heads into the mountains and adopts an orphan cub, after being wrongly accused of murder.

Haggerty got his start in 1964, in the Frankie Avalon-Annette Funicello film Muscle Beach Party, as Biff, a muscle man. He also had roles in the features Girl Happy, starring Elvis Presley; Easy Rider, with Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson; Americana, with David Carradine and Barbara Hershey; King of the Mountain, with Harry Hamlin; and Big Stan, starring Rob Schneider. He played another mountain man in Grizzly Mountain, and the sequel Escape to Grizzly Mountain.

He also appeared as himself, as a member of the NBC team in the Battle of the Network Stars competitions that aired on ABC, as well as Hollywood Squares, Celebrity Challenge of the Sexes and The American Sportsman.

Haggerty died January 15, 2016, in Burbank, California. He was 73.
