Anthony Powell was an English costume designer.

The three-time Academy Award-winning costume designer’s range varied from period to contemporary, but most may recognize his work in the Indiana Jones trilogy, for which he designed Harrison Ford’s iconic hat and whip.

The three-time Academy Award-winning costume designer’s range varied from period to contemporary, but most may recognize his work in the Indiana Jones trilogy, for which he designed Harrison Ford’s iconic hat and whip.

Powell was also the costume designer on the films: The Ninth Gate (1999), 102 Dalmatians (2000), 101 Dalmatians (1996), Hook (1991), Frantic (1988), Ishtar (1987), Evil Under the Sun (1982), Tess (1979), Death on the Nile (1978), Papillon (1973), and The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1969).

A graduate of London’s Central School of Art and Design, Powell designed costumes for the theater, winning a Tony award for The School of Scandal, before his first foray into television on Festival.  He also contributed to the series Shirley’s World, Great Performances, and the TV movie, Capriccio.

Powel died April 16, 2021. He was 85.
