The character actor appeared in films such as The Organization (1971), Bananas (1971), The Candidate (1972), Nashville (1975), Beverly Hills Cop (1987), Dick Tracy (1990), and The Majestic (2001). He was also cast in three Francis Ford Coppola films: The Conversation (1974), One From the Heart (1981), and The Cotton Club (1984).
In addition to his big screen work, Garfield guest starred in a number of television shows including The Mod Squad, Bonanza, Rhoda, Gunsmoke, Taxi, Matlock, Law & Order, Chicago Hope, and The West Wing.
Garfield died April 7, 2020, in Woodland Hills, California. He was 80.
