Xosha Roquemore Brings the Funny

Elevated to series regular on The Mindy Project after a three-episode arc in season one, Xosha Roquemore's star keeps rising.

Xosha Roquemore (pronounced Zo-sha) has a lot in common with Tamra, the sassy nurse she plays on Fox’s romantic sitcom The Mindy Project.

“We have the same energy,” the Los Angeles-based actress says. “I’m fun, vivacious and playful, and Tamra’s outgoing and opinionated. I have a lot of fun with all the one-line quips I get to direct at the other characters.”

Elevated to series regular after a three-episode arc in season one, Roquemore knows how to bring the laughs — although she doesn’t want to be pigeonholed in one genre.

“I feel so at home in a comedic arena, but I also love drama,” says Roquemore, a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. “I’m up for the challenge.”

In fact, it was her role in 2009’s ultra-gritty feature film Precious that brought her to the attention of The Mindy Project’s producers.

Show biz has always been in her blood: her late father, Cliff, was a director, writer and producer who worked in film and theater.

He directed the ‘70s blaxploitation films Petey Wheatstraw and The Human Tornado.

Her mother, Shay Wafer, is a veteran theater management executive who currently runs Brooklyn’s 651 ARTS, a performing-arts organization.

“I grew up in the arts,” Roquemore says. “If I wasn’t acting, I would be doing something else having to do with performance, like stand-up comedy. I’m not about to be a doctor. If I don’t perform, I die!”
