Tim Samaras, Storm Chaser and Media Contributor

Samaras, his son, Tim, and fellow storm chaser Carl Young perished in a tornado that devastated parts of Oklahoma in May 2013.

Tim Samaras, a tornado researcher who contributed to the Discovery program Storm Chasers and provided dramatic extreme-weather videos for other TV productions, died along with two colleagues — one of who was his son, Paul — died May 31, 2013, while covering a powerful tornado near El Reno, Oklahoma. He was 54.

According to news reports, the three men were the first casualties among scientific researchers while chasing tornadoes, a citation attributed to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
