Mary Fickett, Longtime All My Children Cast Member

Fickett played Nurse Ruth Martin on the ABC daytime drama for three decades.

Mary Fickett, an actress best known for the role of nurse Ruth Martin on the ABC daytime drama All My Children, died September 8, 2011, at her home in Virginia. She was 83.

Fickett was part of the All My Children cast from its 1970 debut until 2000.

In 1973, she became the first performer to receive an Emmy Award for work on a daytime drama.

Born May 23, 1928, in Bronxville, New York, Fickett worked extensively in theater, film and television actress before All My Children.

Her first feature was Man on Fire with Bing Crosby in 1957. In 1958, she was nominated for a Tony Award for her Broadway role as Eleanor Roosevelt in Sunrise at Campobello.

In the early 1960s, she joined Harry Reasoner as cohost of Calendar, a CBS morning news-and-features program.

In addition, she appeared in episodes of such series as Naked City, The Untouchables, Bonanza, The FBI and many others.

Fickett is survived by a daughter and a son and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

ABC plans to dedicate the September 21 episode of All My Children to Fickett. Two days later, the series will end its long network run.
