Joan Stein, Award-Winning Producer

Stein, who worked widely in the theater, won a Tony Award for the 1999 production Side Man. She also worked in television and formed a production company with Steve Martin.

Joan Stein, a Tony Award-winning producer who worked principally in the theater but also had several television credits, died August 3, 2012, in Los Angeles. She was 59.

According to news reports, the cause was cancer of the appendix.

Stein who produced dozens of plays on both coasts over the course of a career spanning 30 years.

In addition, she worked in television, and was an executive producer of the NBC sketch comedy series The Downer Channel and the ABC reality series The Scholar.

She produced those projects through Martin/Stein Productions, a company she formed with Steve Martin, with whom she had collaborated on his play Picasso at the Lapin Agile.
