Beano Cook, Beloved College Football Expert for ABC, ESPN

Colorful and knowledgable, Cook was a fan favorite for decades.

Carroll "Beano" Cook, a sports broadcaster dubbed "The Cardinal of College Football," died October 11, 2012, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was 81.

As colorful as he was knowledgable, Cook was a favorite of football fans from years spent with ABC Sports and, later ESPN.

Cook began working at ESPN in 1985 after four years at ABC Sports. In addition to college football programming, SportsCenter and ESPNews Cook was a frequent guest on ESPN Radio and had a podcast on ESPN.com.

In a statement on his passing, ESPN executive chairman George Bodenheimer said, “He was one of a kind. There never was and never will be another Beano. His combination of humor, passion, love of college football and his engaging personality left an indelible mark on the sport and touched anyone who knew him.”
