Ann Rutherford, Actress for Decades in Film and TV

In addition to memorables roles in classic films such as Gone with the Wind and Pride and Prejudice, Rutherford appeared in numerous TV series, and memorably played Suzann Pleshette's mother on The Bob Newhart Show.

Ann Rutherford, an actress known for roles in such classic motion pictures as Gone with the Wind and Pride and Prejudice, as well as many television series, died June 11, 2012, in Beverly Hills. She was 94.

The daughter of a onetime Metropolitan Opera singer, John Rutherford, and actress Lillian Mansfield, Rutherford began performing at a young age.

She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, but moved with her family to Los Angeles, where she broke into movies in 1935 with a role in Waterfront Lady. In addition to Gone with the Wind and Pride and Prejudice, other films of note included A Christmas Carol, Whistling in the Dark, The Adventures of Don Juan and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. She also played Polly Benedict in a string of Andy Hardy movies, starring Mickey Rooney.

Rutherford made her first television appearance in a 1950 episode of Nash Airflyte Theatre, and int he ensuing years appeared in Stars Over Hollywood, Robert Montgomery Presents, Kraft Theatre, Climax!, Playhouse 90, The Red Skelton Hour, The Donna Reed Show, Perry Mason, Love, American Style, The Bob Newhart Show.
