“Wednesday’s Child” and Christine Devine to Receive L.A. Area Governors' Award

Veteran news anchor and philanthropist Christine Devine will accept the prestigious Los Angeles Area Governors Award on behalf of the weekly news segment, “Wednesday’s Child” on FOX11. The announcement was made today by Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Chairman John Shaffner.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA, June 30, 2011 – Veteran news anchor and philanthropist Christine Devine will accept the prestigious Los Angeles Area Governors Award on behalf of the weekly news segment, “Wednesday’s Child” on FOX11. The announcement was made today by Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Chairman John Shaffner.

The Los Angeles Area Governors Award is the most esteemed honor given to an individual, company or an organization for outstanding achievement in the arts, sciences, or management of television, consistently over a period of years, or in recognition of an outstanding singular achievement or contribution. The Award will be presented at the Los Angeles Area Emmy® Awards on Saturday, August 6th at the Television Academy's Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre.

“Christine Devine and 'Wednesday’s Child' embody exactly what The Governors Award was designed to celebrate,” said Shaffner. “Devine has established herself as a leader in local news and used her influence and passion to advocate for others. For the past 15 years, her efforts to find permanent homes for foster children have changed their lives and destinies, all for the good of those individuals and our community.”

Christine Devine is one of Los Angeles’ best known news anchors and champion of the “Wednesday’s Child” feature on KTTV FOX11, responsible for finding permanent families for over 400 foster children. She joined Fox news in 1990, and now anchors the weeknight newscast on Fox 11 and Channel 13. Devine has won 14 Emmy® Awards and she and her co-anchor were voted “Best Anchor Team” by the Associated Press.

For 15 years, Devine has hosted the “Wednesday’s Child” weekly segment, in which she profiles children seeking adoption from a permanent family. Unlike similar programs, “Wednesday’s Child” seeks to highlight especially hard to place children, like those with mental or physical challenges, sibling groups, or older children. “Wednesday’s Child,” sponsored by the Freddie Mac Foundation, is a model of success, having placed over 400 children in “forever homes.” Devine is not only the face of “Wednesday’s Child,” but is directly involved in the weekly production of each segment. In addition to Los Angeles, “Wednesday’s Child” features are also shown in Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.

Devine has been honored by the U.S. Congress and Child Welfare League of America, and was named "Media Volunteer of the Year" by Volunteers of America (LA). She was awarded the National Gracie Allen award by AWRT (American Women in Radio and Television) and the Anna Quindlen award for philanthropy journalism by Society of Professional Journalists. An active community supporter, Devine has been honored before the LA City Council, LA County Board of Supervisors, and by the Los Angeles Police Department and LA County Sheriff's Department.

Devine is an alum of Arizona State University. She is in the Hall of Fame at the Walter Cronkite School of Broadcast Journalism, and has also funded her own journalism scholarship. In addition, Devine is a co-founder of The Good News Foundation, a non-profit built by five TV newswomen dedicated to honoring good news and good works in Los Angeles. The Good News Foundation awards scholarships, grants and sponsors an annual "Legacy Project" to leave a lasting impact on the community.

The Governors Award has been bestowed upon many individuals, companies and organizations that have made a positive impact in the Los Angeles Community. Past recipients include Bill Stout, Hal Fishman, Johnny Grant, KCET, Ted Meyers, Bill Welch, Vin Scully, Jerry Dunphy, Larry McCormick, George Putnam, Gene Autry, KTLA, KMEX, Jess Marlow, Kelly Lange, Joel Tator, Chick Hearn, Pete Noyes, Dr. George Fischbeck, KMEX Univision, Bob Eubanks, Stan Freberg, Telemundo’s KVEA, and Steve Edwards.
