Actor Andy Griffith Dies at 86
Award winning actor-musician Andy Griffith, known to fans all over the globe as "Sheriff Andy Taylor" of fictional small town Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show, died early Tuesday morning at his home in North Carolina.
Actor and musician Andy Griffith, lovingly known to fans all over as "Sheriff Andy Taylor" of fictional small town Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show, died July 3, 2012, at his home in North Carolina, according to reports. He was 86.
Griffith, who passed away after an unspecified illness, has been "laid to rest on his beloved Roanoake Island," his family said in a statement.
In addition to the The Andy Griffith Show, he starred in the title role of long-running mystery series Matlock. From 1986 through 1995, Griffith played "Ben Matlock," highly-paid, murder-solving Southern defense lawyer. Griffith also made a number of appearances in movies, on stage and is a Grammy Award winning recording artist.
