Amazon and Netflix again show that they are contenders in television awards.

Amazon's freshman series Transparent proved once again that television is no longer dominated by the big television networks. The series won Golden Globes for Best Comedy program and a Globe for its star, Jeffrey Tambor as Best Actor in a Comedy.

Netflix pioneer House of Cards also racked up a win for its leading actor, Kevin Spacey.

Other multiple winners were FX's Fargo, winning for Best Miniseries and a Best Actor in a Miniseries for its star Billy Bob Thornton, and Showtime's The Affair, which won Best Drama Series and a Best Actress in a Drama Series award for Ruth Wilson.

It was a big year for new series. Along with the awards for The Affair, Transparent and  Fargo, Gina Rodriguez of new CW series Jane the Virgin took home a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy.

The Foreign Press Association also embraced controversial themes in awarding Globes to Transparent,  a show about a transgender woman, and Matt Bomer for AIDS-themed THe Normal Heart.

On the movie side, the big winner of the night was Richard Linklater's Boyhood, taking awards for Best Director, Best Supporting Actress Patricia Arquette, and the big award of the evening, Best Drama.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman won for Best Actor in a Musical of Comedy for Michael Keaton, and Best Screenplay.
