Tape-Less Revolution at CBS Studio Center

An expert panel talks of the “Tape-Less Revolution” at CBS Studio Center. See what they said about digital technology's impact on production. Story here.

When Digital technology is advancing by the minute. Thanks to computerized camera equipment, news footage can now be edited in the field and sent to the station ready to air. And back at the sitcom soundstage, there’s a system that transports scenes just shot to the edit suite and provides digital dailies to producers’ desktops.

To keep Television Academy members informed of such developments and their  impact on television production, a panel of experts gathered for “Tape-Less Revolution,” April 6 at CBS Studio Center. Speakers included John Idoni, video supervisor, CBS Studio Center; Ed Locke, systems engineer and strategic account manager, Avid Technology, Inc.; Matthew McEwen, senior product manager, product development group, Focus Enhancements, Inc.; Dahandra Patel, acquisitions systems specialist, Sony Corporation and Jeff Youel, president, Wafian Corporation. Carolyn Giardina, Shoot magazine senior editor of technology and post production, was moderator.

Topics included direct-to-edit video recorders, optical disc technology and direct-to-disk recorders. Some devices are as simple to operate as pushing a “record” button, while others offering many options require advanced skills. Though the tapeless environment offers instant previews of footage shot and eliminates time waiting for that footage to be digitized, it also eliminates jobs: an assistant editor is no longer needed for news stories edited in the field, for instance.

The evening was produced by Alex Georgiev and Brian Zink. Kay Bachman Sumner is vice-chair of professional development for the activities committee. Robert O’Donnell is director of activities for the Television Academy.
