It is with great pride and excitement that I report on the Western Publishing Association’s 54th annual Maggie Awards, which were held on Friday night at the LAX Radisson Hotel. Over the past few years, Emmy® Magazine has enjoyed great success at the Maggies, bringing home two awards in 2002, two in 2003 and one last year. This year, Emmy won an incredible five awards— the most received by any publication all evening. In addition to winning four of the six for which we submitted entries, we also took home the prestigious Best Overall Trade Publication, the top accolade for which we were eligible and the equivalent of being named Best Picture at the Oscars.

We also captured, for the fourth year in a row, the top award in our subject category, Best Trade Publication in Communication, Advertising & the Arts. Our June issue prevailed competition from American Cinematographer, Editors Guild magazine, Screen Actor and Written By.

In addition, we won the Maggie for Best Overall Design, for our June issue. Congratulations go to our very talented art director, Rich Bleiweiss.

We were also especially pleased to win the Maggie for Special Theme Issue for our December issue on global production. Kudos go to our contributing editor Kathy O'Steen: this achievement is due in great part to Kathy’s keen industry knowledge and editorial insight.

Also a winner: first-time Emmy contributor Deborah Greene, who penned “Shopping for Murder and Other Adventures” for our April issue based on her work as a prop buyer for Law & Order: S.V.U. Deborah's piece was deemed Best Feature Article, beating competition that included multi-Maggie Award winning magazine California Lawyer.

Congrats, too, to longtime Emmy writer John Griffiths. His cover profile of Charlie Sheen for our June issue was nominated for Best Interview or Profile, though, alas, did not win. Emmy was also nominated in the category of Best Regularly Featured Department, for our front-of-the-book section, “In the Mix.”

Having only been here since December, I cannot take credit for these wonderful achievements (which have certainly set the bar high for next year!), but I ask that you all join me in extending congratulations of the highest order to Emmy editor Gail Polevoi and our art director, Rich Bleiweiss, whose collaborative efforts over the past few years have turned our magazine into one of the most respected publications in the western United States. Thanks are also due to former editor in chief Larry Gerber, who oversaw the magazine for most of last year; publications administrator Rosa Madonna, for her tireless support with thousands of crucial office details; and our far-flung roster of contributing writers, photographers and illustrators, whose superior work helps to make us what we are.

This year the WPA received nearly 2,000 entries, representing more than 500 magazines published or distributed west of the Mississippi River. The WPA is a non-profit trade association working to advance the business of print and online magazines in the western United States. For more than fifty years, the WPA has bestowed awards of merit to deserving publications whose work was deemed “the best of the west” in a wide variety of categories within the publishing industry. We are proud to be among them.
