Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Committee on Diversity Presents the First Televisionary Salon & Awards

North Hollywood, CA, August 10, 2005 – The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Committee on Diversity will present The First Televisionary Salon & Awards, celebrating those individuals who have advanced diversity in the industry. Dick Askin, Chairman and CEO of the Television Academy, made the announcement today. 

This first salon, which honors diversity in fiction programming, will take place on Tuesday, August 16 at the Beverly Hills Country Club at 7 p.m. ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson will receive The First Televisionary Award in recognition of his commitment to diversity both on-screen and behind the scenes in the 2004-2005 television season. Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson will act as mistress of ceremonies for the event, which his being sponsored by industry trade publication Television Week.

"As a result of our groundbreaking, day-long conference, 'Television's Challenges in Black, White and Multicolor' held last fall at the Television Academy, we created the Televisionary Salon & Awards to further recognize the contributions that industry executives are taking to create diversity in television – in executive and creative ranks as well as on screen," said Askin.  "I’m delighted that Steve has been chosen to be the first recipient of this award, which reflects his dedication to diversifying his network and leading the way for the industry."

The evening will include networking with industry executives and a Salon where an exchange of ideas will identify ways to advance diversity in the industry. Subsequent salons will recognize non-fiction programming and performers, among other Television Academy peer groups.

The Televisionary Salon & Awards honors a select number of network, studio, production executives who were involved in green-lighting of shows with a diverse creator and/or the hiring of diverse show runners, producers, directors, writers and on-screen talent regardless of the ethnic makeup of the cast from the 2004-2005 season.
