Bonnie Franklin, Starred in Popular Comedy Series One Day at a Time
Franklin, who won a Tony for the musical Applause, earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for her performance as divorced mother Ann Romano.
Bonnie Franklin, an actress best known for her starring role in the TV comedy One Day at a Time, died March 1, 2013, at her home in Los Angeles.
According to news reports, the cause was pancreatic cancer.
On One Day at a TIme, which aired on CBS from 1975-1984, Franklin played Ann Romano, a divorced mother raising two teenage daughters in Indianapolis. The character is considered one of the first independent women to be portrayed on television, and the series addressed many serious issues, including sexual harassment, rape and menopause.
Born in Santa Monica, Franklin began performing as a child and appeared on such early television series as The Colgate Comedy Hour and Shower of Stars, and she declined an offer to be a Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club.
Other TV credits included Gidget, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Munsters, Touched by an Angel and, more recently, Hot in Cleveland.
She also starred in made-for-television movies, most notably as Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger in Portrait of a Rebel: The Remarkable Mrs. Sanger. She also saluted her parents, Sam and Claire Franklin, in the special Bonnie & The Franklins.
In addition, she had roles in the feature films The Wrong Man and The Kettles in the Ozarks.
A successful Broadway performer before her breakthrough on One Day at a Time, Franklin won a Tony Award for the musical Applause.
In the mid-1980s she directed two episodes of One Day at a Time, after which she also directed Charles in Charles, Karen's Song and several episodes of The Munsters Today.
