Susan Carol Schwary, Emmy-Nominated Hairstylist, Dies

Also an active member of her union, Schwary earned her Emmy noms for Deadwood and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Susan Carol Schwary, a hairstylist who earned Primetime Emmy-nominations for her work on the series Deadwood and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died September 10, 2009, at her home in Valencia, California. She was 61.

According to news reports, she had been battling breast cancer.

Schwary worked as a hairstylist and wig designer in the entertainment industry for more than 30 years. Her other notable television credits include the series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, JAG and Star Trek: The Next Generation. A wig piece that she created for Star Trek: The Next Generation was placed in the Smithsonian in Washington.

She also worked on the feature films Havana, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Little Miss Sunshine.

Schwary was active in the Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Guild Local 706 and fought for fair wages and equal rights for members.

A native of San Diego, Schwary attended Citrus College, where she majored in art and business. When she switched majors to cosmetology, her career blossomed and she won competitions in hairstyling and haircutting. She entered the film and television industry in the late 1970s.

She was married for 23 years to Ronald Schwary, a producer who won an Oscar for the movie Ordinary People and is now executive producer of the CBS series Medium.

Schwary is survived by her mother, a brother and two sons.
