Warren Mitchell was a British actor best known for his starring role on the BBC series Till Death Us Do Part and In Sickness and in Health.
Mitchell appeared on Till Death Us Do Part from 1965 to 1975 as Alf Garnett, a working-class Cockney patriarch with blunt and biased opinions. The show served as the source material for Norman Lear’s classic adaptation, All in the Family, starring Carroll O’Connor as Archie Bunker.
He reprised the role in the series In Sickness and in Health, from 1985 to 1992. The show followed the main characters, Alf and his wife Elsie, after their daughter Rita left home and Elsie was confined to a wheelchair.
Mitchell played Alf several more times, including in the film version of Till Death Us Do Part, as well as in the movie The Alf Garnett Saga and the British series A Christmas Night with the Stars, It’s Lulu and The Ernie Sigley Show.
Mitchell also appeared on a wide variety of British television shows including U.K. series Sir Francis Drake, The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre, The Saint, Secret Agent, The Avengers and Gormenghast, all of which also aired in the US.

In 1982 Mitchell won a best supporting actor AFI Award for his role in the comedic film Norman Loves Rose.
He died November 14, 2015, in England. He was 89.
