The book was turned into a 1976 television movie, and was re-made for television once more in 2004 with a cast that included Jeremy Davies, Clea DuVall, Allison Smith, Eric Dane and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

Bugliosi was a part of a team that prosecuted Manson and four others over nine-and-a-half months. The team was able to prove, with the help of 84 witnesses and 290 pieces of evidence, that Manson led a cult-like group in the murders of Sharon Tate, Leno LaBianca, Rosemary LaBianca and four other victims.

The title of the book and movie came from a Beatles song of the same name, which Bugliosi proposed had inspired Manson to violence. Bugliosi wrote 12 books in all, including And the Sea Will Tell, Till Death Us Do Part and Four Days in November, the three of which were made into television movies. The latter was renamed Parkland for television and followed the events that occurred at Dallas’s Parkland Hospital on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Bugliosi died June 6, 2015, in Los Angeles. He was 80.
