Tom Rolf

Tom Rolf was an Oscar-winning picture editor whose credits included many acclaimed feature films as well as the television series The Big Valley and several made-for-TV movies.

Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Rolf served in the Norwegian Merchant Marine and worked as a ski patrolman before moving to the U.S. to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

He originally pursued film editing with the intention of becoming a director, but he was so captivated by editing that he went eventually worked on more than 40 movies with such acclaimed directors as Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader, Philip Kaufman, Adrian Lyne and Michael Mann.

His feature credits included The Man Who Loved Cat DancingFrench Connection II, Taxi Driver, New York, New York, Blue Collar, Hardcore, Heaven's Gate, WarGames, The Right Stuff (for which he shared an Oscar), Nine 1/2 Weeks, Jacob's Ladder, The Pelican Brief, Dangerous Minds, Heat and many others.

Before his feature career took off, he was an editor and production coordinator on the popular television series The Big Valley. His other TV credits included the telefilms Fear on TrialThe Executioner's Song and Perfect Murder, Perfect Town: JonBenét and the City of Boulder, as well as the Russian series Admiral.

In 2003, Rolf was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the American Cinema Editors.

Rolf died July 14, 2014. He was 82.
