Tim Pigott-Smith was a British actor on both the stage and screen, best known for his starring role in the 1984 British television miniseries The Jewel in the Crown, about the final days of the British Raj in India during World War II.

Over his four-decade long career, Pigott-Smith also appeared in the films Clash of the Titans, The Four Feathers, Gangs of New York, V for Vendetta, Quantum of Solace and Alice in Wonderland.

The actor also appeared frequently on television, including roles in Doctor Who, Agata Christie’s Poirot, Downton Abbey and the limited series Houdini.

AT the time of his passing, he had completed filming for the BBC Two drama King Charles III, an adaptation of the theater production, in which he was to reprise the title role that he performed on Broadway and in the West End.

Pigott-Smith died April 7, 2017. He was 70.
