Sanford Socolow

Sanford Socolow was the executive producer of the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, where he was the right-hand man and liaison to the renowned anchorman. During Socolow’s tenure at CBS, he also worked as the vice president of the networks news division, and served as the Washington bureau chief.

Socolow’s career at CBS spanned over 30 years and began with a job as a writer on the morning news. Soon afterward, Socolow began writing for a midday news program fronted by an up-and-coming Cronkite. A friendship and working relationship started then that continued until Cronkite’s passing in 2009.

As Cronkite’s writer and producer, Socolow’s behind-the-scenes efforts resulted in trips around the world reporting on big events, such as their work together for the CBS primetime news program Eyewitness to History. Together they covered the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, multiple important space launches — including the Apollo 11 moon landing, and many more benchmark moments in history.

Over the years, Socolow’s and Cronkite’s careers would intersect. In 1962, Socolow rejoined the CBS Evening News after Cronkite had taken over as anchor, after taking a brief sabbatical from CBS for a position at Columbia University. In 1993, Socolow became an executive producer at Cronkite-Ward Productions, developing specials for the Discovery channel.

Socolow died on January 31, 2015, in New York. He was 86.
